Psychological perspective on surgery
The training for surgeons could be more realistic and more efficient if 'evidence-based' methods were used, according to surgeon and instructor Jaap Hamming. He is therefore working closely with cognitive psychologists Guido Band and Bernhard Hommel on improvements to the training. A custom-made training programme would take more account of the individual surgeons being trained.
Interdisciplinary research
The Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) suports the collaboration between vascular surgeons and cognitive psychologists, and subsides a PhD candidate for an interdisciplionary research project on 'Increasing the efficiency of minimally invasive surgery training.' The aim is to define which cognitive skills determine how well a surgeon is able to use the equipment in laparoscopic surgery. This requires such skills as spatial awareness, attention to detail and manual dexterity.
Custom-made training
The aim is to take more account of the individual differences in surgeons under training. The next step is to develop more focused training programmes.
